Brooks to Hold First “Connecting Careers & Classrooms” Event
Congresswoman Susan W. Brooks (R-IN5) will hold the first in a series of “Connecting Careers and Classrooms” events on Thursday, April 17 at the headquarters of Beck’s Hybrids in Atlanta, Indiana. The Connecting Careers and Classrooms (CCC) initiative will give members of the business and education community a chance to discuss career opportunities in vital Hoosier industries and the classes students must take to master 21st century workforce skills.
“I am so excited to invite middle school and high school educators to this important professional growth opportunity,” Brooks said. “In Indiana, we’re lucky to have several cutting edge and growing sectors that give our students so many rewarding career paths to choose from. Unfortunately, sometimes our students are unaware of these options and surprised by the skills they need to succeed in certain fields. Many are surprised to learn that the average agricultural job pays over $58,000 a year. Connecting Careers and Classrooms provides counselors, teachers and administrators access to industry leaders who can talk about the new opportunities available to Hoosier students and the classes students should consider taking to earn the careers they might want.”
The first event will focus on agribusinesses and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Panelists representing several Hoosier companies will share hiring practices and provide industry expert advice. Major Hoosier employers participating include:
- Beck’s Hybrids of Atlanta – the largest family-owned retail seed company in the United States.
- Red Gold Tomatoes of Elwood – producer of premium quality canned tomatoes and tomato-based products for retail, food service, private brands and club stores.
- JBS United of Sheridan – a global leader in animal health and nutrition providing research-based products to animal owners and producers.
Welcoming remarks by Congresswoman Brooks and the keynote address from Project Lead The Way (PTLW) President and CEO Vince Bertram will both be delivered between 9:00 – 10 a.m. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, PLTW is the nation’s leading provider of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs. More than 5,000 elementary, middle and high schools in all fifty states have adopted the PLTW curriculum. Participants will also take an in depth tour of the Beck’s Hybrids headquarters. The event is free of charge and lunch will be served. Members of the media wishing to cover the event may contact Alex Damron at Alex.Damron@mail.house.gov or 202-225-2276.
The event is open to educators who live or work outside the 5th District and all attendees will receive documentation for up to 6 and half hours of Professional Growth Points.
